Man tries to disarm police officer in Hanford and is arrested | YourCentralValley.com

HANFORD, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A man was arrested after allegedly trying to disarm a police officer while he was being detained, the Hanford Police Department said.

Officers say they observed Casanova Dontre Lewis, 36, walking Wednesday. Lewis was known to have an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest.


Police say they attempted to contact Lewis to arrest him on his outstanding arrest warrant, but he fled on foot away from officers. Lewis was located minutes later in the 700 block of S. 11th Avenue.

According to investigators, an officer approached Lewis with his firearm drawn and gave him several commands to get on the ground and not resist. Lewis then took an aggressive stance toward the officer.

As the officer attempted to holster his weapon in order to make a physical arrest of the subject, police said Lewis grabbed the officer-issued handgun. The officer was able to maintain control of the weapon and return it to its holster after a brief struggle.

Officers say Lewis then continued to resist officers and did not follow commands, resulting in an officer using the Taser. He was eventually arrested and transported to the Kings County Jail, where he was booked on suspicion of resisting arrest, attempting to take a firearm from a police officer, obstructing a police officer by force, battery against a police officer and having an outstanding arrest warrant against a police officer. of a probation violation.
