Man surrenders, claims self-defense after fatal shooting at Napier home

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – The Metro Nashville Police Department is investigating a self-defense complaint following a fatal shooting in the 600 block of Charles E. Davis Boulevard Saturday afternoon.

Police say Edrick Doak, 23, told detectives he shot Bryan T. Lewis, 29, because he thought Lewis was about to shoot him. Lewis died after being taken to a nearby hospital.

Police said the investigation showed Doak was carrying a can of food to an apartment from his car. Then, Lewis got on a scooter and accused Doak of shooting him during a previous date, according to police.

Doak denied it, police said. Then Lewis got off his scooter and appeared to pull a gun from his waistband, police said. Doak dropped the can, pulled out his own gun and shot Lewis, police said.

Doak fled and later went to Metropolitan Police headquarters.

During an interview with a detective, Doak said he received information that Lewis was going to kill him.

Police said the investigation into the fatal shooting will be turned over to the district attorney's office once it is completed.

Police said no charges have been filed against Doak in connection with this case, but he was arrested on an unrelated domestic assault warrant.
