Man surrenders after fatal shooting at party

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – The Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) announced they arrested a 28-year-old man after a shooting on the city's northeast side early Sunday morning. One man was found dead and another injured.

FWPD officers identified the suspect as 28-year-old Tyshawn Morris. He was arrested on preliminary charges of murder and attempted murder.

According to FWPD, officers responded around 5 a.m. to a home in Melan Cove after receiving reports of a shooting. Police said when they arrived they found two men inside the home with apparent gunshot wounds.

Court documents say the owner was hosting a watch party for a professional fight when the shooting occurred. The homeowner told police he did not witness the incident, but later called detectives to tell them he had obtained video of the altercation from someone else, according to the documents.

A probable cause affidavit says the video showed a man, who was later identified as Tyshawn Morris, arguing with one of the victims. The homeowner told police that Morris was the shooter.

According to court documents, later that morning, Morris showed up at the police station saying he wanted to talk about the shooting.

Morris told police that “everyone was drinking and having a good time,” but later that night, one of the victims “disrespected” him, which led to an argument, according to the affidavit.

Court documents say Morris told police he tried to break up the argument by walking outside to wait for his ride. He told officers he was “talking” to a woman he didn't know when he said the victim came out and punched Morris in the face.

According to the affidavit, Morris said he responded to the attack by pulling out his gun and shooting 3 to 4 times. Morris told police he wasn't trying to kill anyone and was “aiming low,” according to the documents.

Court documents show the gunfire resulted in a bullet that grazed one man and killed another.

The surviving victim told officers he tried to push the gun away from Morris and realized a short time later that he had been shot, documents state. After realizing he had been shot, the victim told police he ran away when he heard a few more gunshots and saw the other victim lying on the ground.

The Allen County coroner has not yet released the identity of the slain victim.

This is an ongoing investigation.
