Man stabbed and shot during argument at Sunset Boat Ramp & Park expected to survive

NEWBERRY COUNTY, SC (WIS) – A 28-year-old man who was stabbed and shot Saturday night at a Lake Murray boat launch is expected to survive, according to Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster.

Newberry County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) deputies said a verbal argument at Sunset Boat Ramp & Park in Prosperity sparked the altercation, which quickly escalated. Foster said that although the man suffered from gunshot and stab wounds, he is expected to be OK.

“Then it looked like a big fight broke out,” one Newberry resident said. “You could hear the girls yelling, 'He's got a knife, he's got a knife,' someone else yelling, 'There's a gun,' 'There's a gun,' and a few minutes more late, you see people running out of the parking lot, then you hear gunshots.

Around 6:45 p.m. Saturday, the Newberry County Sheriff's Office said the man, who has not been identified, was riding a jet ski when he splashed the suspect with water from his jet ski. The man and suspect then got into an argument on the boat dock.

Officers said this led the suspect to grab a knife and stab the victim.

According to an incident report, the suspect then ran to his car, grabbed a gun and shot the victim. The victim was transported to a trauma center.

“The one individual was stabbed and shot; he received all the violent blows,” Sheriff Foster said. “Last I heard, he was undergoing treatment (and) expected to survive. »

Sheriff Foster said the boat ramp is usually crowded during the summer months, so arguments and disputes are not out of the ordinary. However, the sheriff said those arguments usually don't involve guns.

Sheriff Foster believes having a parking attendant at the boat ramp throughout the day could help alleviate disputes and keep the area from becoming overcrowded.

“Have a park ranger there,” Sheriff Foster said. “We'd tell them, 'We're going to allow x number of people in,' and they could monitor people on the boat ramp, monitor people using the boat ramp. docks and monitor alcohol consumption.

As of Sunday, no arrests had been made. NCSO has identified several possible suspects as the investigation is ongoing.
