Man shot, more than five people stabbed during brawl at Lake Berryessa: police

A man was shot and killed and at least five people were stabbed during a large fight Saturday evening on the shores of Lake Berryessa, the Napa County Sheriff's Office said.

As of Saturday evening, police did not name the man who died or say where he lived.

“Several victims were stabbed,” said sheriff’s office spokesman Henry Wofford. “We don’t have the count at this point. From what I understand, there were definitely more than five who were stabbed.

Two people with stab wounds were flown to local hospitals in serious condition, Wofford said. Other stabbing victims were taken to hospital by friends or family members, he added.

“We're actually in hospital emergency rooms…looking for witnesses and victims,” Wofford said at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, adding that officers were also still at the scene speaking with witnesses.

Police were called to the Oak Shores day-use area at 5:30 p.m., Wofford said. “We didn’t witness the fight,” Wofford said. “At the time we were there, there was no fight, there were victims, stabbing victims and a shooting victim. It was quite chaotic.

Investigators had not determined what started the fight, or how many people were involved, Wofford said. “I can’t tell you if it was one group or four different groups all fighting at the same time,” he said. “It is possible that there was more than one initial altercation.”

The Oak Shores day-use area on the west side of Lake Berryessa — which saw a high of 86 degrees Saturday — is free to enter and gets busy in good weather, Wofford said.

Due to the “scale and nature” of the incident, the Sheriff's Office is being assisted in the investigation by the Napa County Major Crimes Task Force, which includes the Napa Police Department and the Napa County District Attorney's Office, Wofford said.

“We’ll work all night,” Wofford said. “We are only in the embryonic stages of this investigation.”
