Man shot dead by police near Park Circle, coroner says

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD) – The Charleston County Coroner has released the identity of a 34-year-old man killed in an officer-involved shooting near Park Circle Friday night.

Quentin Ravenel died at Trident Medical Center at 9:12 p.m. from multiple gunshot wounds sustained in the Alpha Street shooting.

A North Charleston officer responded to the scene on Braddock Avenue around 8 p.m. after receiving a report of a suspicious person who was “acting erratically and making inconsistent statements,” according to police.

Police found the individual, identified as Ravenel, attempting to enter a residence on Alpha Street. The responding officer attempted to stop him, and a fight ensued. During the fight, Ravenel stormed into the residence, where the homeowner confronted him with a firearm.

Shots were fired by both the homeowner and the officer, said North Charleston police spokesman Have Jacobs.

The officer and Ravenel were both injured. Ravenel was injured in the shooting and died of his injuries at the hospital.

The officer was injured in the fight. Police have not provided an update on the officer's condition.

The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating the incident. It is standard practice for SLED to investigate police-involved shootings in South Carolina.
