Man sentenced to prison for deadly assault in downtown Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A Lincoln man will spend at least a decade behind bars for fatally punching a man downtown last summer.

Judge Matthew Mellor on Friday sentenced Angel Rodriguez Alvis, 23, to 23 to 26 years in prison.

He will receive credit for 195 days already served and will be eligible for parole in approximately 11 years.

In the early morning hours of August 27, Rodriguez Alvis and two others assaulted James Baylor near 13th and P streets.

Police said Rodriguez Alvis punched Baylor in the face.

Baylor fell and hit his head on the sidewalk. He was taken to hospital with a brain hemorrhage and other injuries.

Baylor, 55, died nine days later.

Rodriguez Alvis pleaded guilty in April to involuntary manslaughter, terroristic threats and abuse of a vulnerable adult.
