Kresten Wolff was killed and his two children were injured in a February crash at West 64th Avenue and Lamar Place.

GOLDEN, Colo. — A 23-year-old man was sentenced to prison Tuesday for a crash that killed a father and injured two children in February.

Kresten Wolff and her children were crossing the intersection of West 64th Avenue and Lamar Place in Arvada on Feb. 5 after the light turned green. Juan Ortega Torres Jr., 23, ran the red light and crashed into Wolff's car. The impact pushed Wolff's car into a resident's yard and home.

Torres' blood alcohol level was 0.174, more than twice the legal limit. Marijuana and fentanyl were also present in his system, the First Judicial District Attorney's Office said during sentencing Tuesday afternoon.

Wolff's wife, Alisha, spoke at the sentencing.

“His hellos were warm and welcoming,” she said of her husband. “His goodbyes were never rushed. He was in a constant state of mind that we must say goodbye to our loved ones so that they fully understand how much he loves them.”

A judge sentenced Torres to a total of 12 years in prison – eight years for the vehicular homicide – drunk driving charge and two years each for two vehicular assault – drunk driving charges.

At his sentencing, Torres said he regretted his actions and wished he could change places with Wolff.
