Man sentenced for illegal firearm possession | News, Sports, Jobs

A Minot man has been sentenced to serve one year and one day in the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation after changing his guilty plea to unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.

Parris Lashaunt Hayes Jr., 26, of Minot, entered his change of plea to the Class C felony in North Central District Court on June 24.

According to court documents, the charge stems from an anonymous tip sent to the Minot Probation Office on March 20 that Hayes had a firearm at his home. Hayes is not allowed to own a firearm due to a prior 2021 conviction for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. A parole search was conducted at Hayes’ home on March 21, which turned up a loaded Ruger .22-caliber revolver. Hayes was arrested and charged shortly after.

Judge Richard Hagar sentenced Hayes to a suspended sentence of one year and one day in jail, less 97 days already served. Hayes was sentenced to one year of supervised probation upon his release and ordered to pay $125 in fines and court costs.
