Man sentenced after shooting into air, causing panic and leading to fatal pedestrian crash

PEORIA (25News Now) – A man will spend 15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after being convicted of reckless discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon in a case that led to a fatal pedestrian accident.

The Peoria County State's Attorney's Office said Demetrius D. Drummond, 35, was sentenced following his April conviction in the Oct. 28 case. Just before 1 a.m., the State Attorney's Office said Drummond was at a party in the 200 block of East Thrush Avenue in East Bluff where he got into an argument with another party-goer and shot recklessly with his gun in the air.

In the ensuing commotion in the street, as people began to flee, Kobe Johnson, 24, was struck and killed by a car.

At Wednesday's sentencing hearing, Johnson's mother spoke to Drummond, saying she knew he never intended for this tragedy to happen. She did, however, have one wish: that he think of his son every day he is in prison, the state's attorney's office said.

Drummond was sentenced to nine years for unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and six years for reckless discharge of a firearm, to be served consecutively.
