A suspect was charged with petty theft June 12 after he and a woman he said was his wife went through a self-checkout machine and called in 52 items worth $534.84.

When the man inserted his credit card to pay for the merchandise, the card was declined. In the meantime, the woman had taken the cart containing the items to the parking lot. The suspect asked security to allow him to go to his vehicle to retrieve another credit card.

When the man and a security guard went to the parking lot, the woman, the couple's items and their car were missing.

“[The suspect] acted as if he was confused by the fact that his wife had just left the store without him,” according to the police report. The man also did not remember his wife's date of birth, according to the report.

The man was charged with petty theft and turned over to Lakewood police on a warrant from that community. At this time, police are unsure of the woman's identity, according to the police report.
