Man pleads guilty in death of missing fiancée in Ohio

The fiancé of an Ohio art student who went missing nearly 13 years ago pleaded guilty Friday to involuntary manslaughter.

John Carter, 36, was charged with two counts of murder when he was arrested in March 2023. He now faces up to three years in prison when he is sentenced on July 18.

The charges stem from the August 2011 disappearance of Katelyn Markham, who was last seen at her Fairfield home. At the time, Markham was weeks away from finishing his degree in graphic arts at the Art Institute of Ohio-Cincinnati, and Carter said they were planning to move to Colorado later in the year.

Skeletal remains identified as those of Markham were discovered in 2013 in a wooded area in Cedar Grove, Indiana, about 20 miles west of his home in Fairfield. Authorities have ruled her death a homicide but have not determined how she was killed.

Butler County prosecutors said Carter caused Markham's death through “physical violence and force.”
