Man pleads guilty in connection with fatal 2019 shooting | The latest news from WDEL News

Wilmington man pleads guilty to murder and other charges in old shooting death case.

Dashawn Daley, 29, faces sentencing in June. He was arrested last August following an investigation into the fatal shooting of Hakeem Smalls, 29, in September 2019.

Daley was already behind bars on unrelated charges at the time of his arrest. A probation violation charge against him was also resolved in the plea agreement.

Prosecutors said Daley robbed Smalls at gunpoint in the area of 25th Street and Monroe Street, stole a gun that Smalls had legally purchased and shot him twice before fleeing the scene .

“I am grateful for the hard work of our team and the Wilmington Police Department,” said Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings. “Thanks to their dedication and perseverance, justice has finally been served. May it bring some peace to the family and loved ones of the victim.

“This guilty plea represents the culmination of our efforts to bring justice to the victim’s family,” Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos said. “I appreciate both the detective in charge of the initial investigation as well as the members of our cold case unit, who helped us bring closure to our investigation and ensure the suspect will be held accountable.”
