Man killed in South Bend police-involved shooting identified – 95.3 MNC

The man killed in a police-involved shooting earlier this week in South Bend has been identified.

South Bend police officers were called to East Race and LaSalle around 6:40 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, for reports of a man threatening another person with a knife.

During their encounter, an officer attempted to use a Taser to subdue John Charles Neiswender, 69, but was unsuccessful.

Another police officer then shot him.

Neiswender died in hospital.

The sheriff's office says there is no timetable for when its investigation into the case will be completed.

Statement released by South Bend Mayor James Mueller:

My thoughts are with the family and loved ones of John Neiswender as we mourn this tragic loss in our community. My thoughts and prayers are also with our first responders and their families, as well as other members of our municipal team and neighbors who experienced this traumatic event.

We are committed to conducting a full and transparent investigation and making any necessary improvements to our emergency response moving forward, and I ask for the community's patience as we await more information from Sheriff Redman and his team investigation.

Statement issued by St. Joseph County Sheriff Bill Redman/St. Joseph County Police:

The deceased was identified as John Charles Neiswender, 69, of South Bend. Investigators
located and met with members of Mr. Neiswender's family to inform them of his death.

Sheriff Bill Redman says, “I would first like to thank the public and the media for their patience as our
County and Mishawaka investigators are gathering all evidence, awaiting autopsy, toxicology and
ballistic test results and reports, and finalize their own reports for the County Attorney's Office.
Redman continued: “We understand the public's desire for information and answers. However,
maintain the integrity of the investigation and ensure that only fully accurate and proven facts are
made public, we will not release specific details about the actions of the officers or the suspect
until the investigation is completed and has been reviewed by the County Attorney's Office.

The sheriff concluded by stating: “We cannot provide an estimated timeline for the duration of the investigation.
