Man killed in collision between car and pedestrian in Sandy identified as Steve Klauke

SANDY — Police confirmed to KSL TV Tuesday that the man killed in a car-pedestrian collision Monday night was former Salt Lake Bees radio announcer Steve Klauke.

Lt. Carriger of the Sandy Police Department said the driver was heading west on 10600 South and went to turn right onto 1300 East, but did not see Klauke, who was crossing the road on a crossing for pedestrians.

Police said Klauke was walking on the north side of 10600 South, heading east. He began crossing Route 1300 East when he was struck by a pickup truck.

Klauke was taken to a local hospital.

The driver remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation. Carriger said there was no suspicion of impairment, but officers were investigating whether distracted driving could have played a role in the crash.

“The driver of the pickup truck was driven by a 64-year-old man who immediately stopped his vehicle, jumped out and returned to the scene,” Carriger told KSL TV. “He remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation.”

Klauke, 69, is well known in Utah as the longtime voice of the Salt Lake Bees. He spent 29 years broadcasting 4,181 Bees games. He also won the Utah Sports Broadcaster of the Year award in 1995, 2015 and 2016.

Klauke retired after last season. He was still the radio voice of Weber State University football and men's basketball.

Sandy police said there were no signs the driver was impaired in any way. Investigators are conducting a full reconstruction of the accident, speaking with witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage from the area.
