Man killed by sheriff's deputies in Auburn identified

The King County Medical Examiner's Office has identified a man killed following a deputy-involved shooting in Auburn on May 24 that involved both the King County Sheriff's Office and the Auburn Police Department .

Michael Aaron Vaughn, 48, died in Auburn from multiple gunshot wounds sustained at a residence in the city, according to the King County Medical Examiner's Office. The medical examiner's office identified Vaughn's death as a homicide.

The Valley Independent Investigation Team, a multi-agency team that investigates incidents involving police, took responsibility for the death investigation.

According to a previous release from the Des Moines Police Department – ​​which was leading the Valley Independent Investigation Team's investigation into the incident – ​​the subject was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Des Moines Police Department released an update on May 30 stating that the team had received video from both a SWAT vehicle and officers' body-worn cameras and had begun analyzing the footage.

According to a previous press release, the King County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team and the Auburn Police Department responded around 11 a.m. May 24 to 24 Auburn Way South in Auburn to execute a civil eviction order at high risk. Kolby Crossley, public information officer for the Auburn Police Department, said the department helped close the road for the King County Sheriff's Office and was not involved in the incident in any other capacity .

According to the earlier release, officers contacted Vaughn minutes after arriving on scene, “which led them to use deadly force.” First responders pronounced Vaughn deceased at the scene.

The six sheriff's office deputies involved in the incident have all been placed on administrative leave.
