Man killed after road rage incident in Clearfield identified

CLEARFIELD, Utah — A man who died following a road rage-related shooting has been identified.

Clearfield City police identified the deceased as James Edward Saccato, 63, of West Point, Utah.

The incident began Monday evening, June 3, near Industrial Parkway and SR-193 in Clearfield City. Police say someone called Layton dispatch to report a hit-and-run involving two vehicles.

In a statement, police said the 911 caller was one of the drivers involved in the road rage incident.

Police say the driver of the car he was following was “trying to escape the 911 caller.” The caller remained on the phone with police, updating his location, “while pursuing the other vehicle.”

The car pursued by the 911 caller stopped near 300 North 1200 West. The driver of the fleeing vehicle got out of his car and approached the pursuing vehicle.

“This encounter led to a shooting which cost the life of the driver of the fleeing vehicle,” police said. “The 911 caller has been taken into custody and is currently cooperating with the investigation.”

Police are asking anyone driving on SR-193 between State Street and 1000 West, Clearfield, between 6:20 p.m. and 6:35 p.m., Monday, June 3, to contact them.

Specifically, they are looking for dash cam video showing a dark-colored 2002 Chevy K2500 truck and a white 2000 Ford Ranger.
