Man killed after driving car off bridge identified by police

One person was killed in a crash in northwest Oklahoma City Tuesday morning, police have identified the victim.

David Atkins, 57, was driving at a high speed when he exited Memorial Road to the left, hit two signs and hit a concrete wall before crashing in the southbound lanes of Lake Hefner Parkway, police said . Atkins was pronounced dead at the scene.

The impact was so violent that the engine was ejected.

That section of the boardwalk was closed for hours while police investigated. But the cause remains unclear and police say no other vehicles were involved.

A witness took photos showing bystanders rushing towards the rubble to help. The car's engine can be seen on fire.

Another witness said she was waiting at a red light when she saw the car leave the bridge. She said it all happened in about 2 seconds.
