Man injured in Meadowview shooting is potential suspect

A 23-year-old man, one of five people injured in a shooting Monday in Sacramento's Meadowview neighborhood, is believed to be a suspect in the shooting, police said. Jayovanni Head, of Sacramento, was arrested and booked on felony assault charges after being medically cleared of a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The Memorial Day shooting was reported around 8 p.m. in the 70th block of Coral Gables Court, near Meadowview Road in South Sacramento. Three men, a woman and a teenage girl were shot, according to police spokesman Officer Cody Tapley. All are expected to survive. Police have not said why investigators believe Head is a suspect in the shooting. The investigation remains active and detectives are still processing evidence and reviewing statements, police said. Community advocate and Voice of the Youth founder Berry Accius went to the scene of the shooting Tuesday, frustrated by another violent incident in an underserved Sacramento community. “They need support before tragedies like this. We need to look at this in a more proactive way than a reactionary one, and I think that's a lot of the frustration for many of us who do this work “It's almost as if we're only reacting in moments,” Accius said. “Young people have something to do during the summer,” Accius said, especially in light of potential cuts to youth programs. “Communities like those in the Meadowview area deserve to receive more resources and funding . opportunities for children, then you will see a 100% difference,” Accius said.
