Man injured after getting stuck at Snowden Dam on Big Island

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Multiple emergency services crews assisted in a technical rescue off US-501 in the Big Island area of ​​Bedford County on Friday, May 24.

Amherst County Public Safety Officer Brad Beam told WFXR News on scene that crews received a call around noon about a report of a person who had suffered an industrial-type injury. Crews arrived to find a man trapped in a confined space above water and had fallen 15 feet.


Beam reports that several agencies were called to assist in the rescue, including the Lynchburg, Monelision and Big Island volunteer fire departments. The Bedford Fire Special Operations Tactical Team was also on scene with rescue boats in case a water evacuation was necessary.

Crews used a technical rescue approach to get the patient out, using rope systems to get the man out of the small space and specialist boards to stabilize him. Units remained on scene for approximately two hours to extract the patient.

Beam reports the man suffered a non-life-threatening leg injury and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
