Man in wheelchair arrested after shooting at Philadelphia convenience store; Second suspect sought in another fatal shooting

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A man in a wheelchair was arrested Wednesday after allegedly shooting someone at a Philadelphia convenience store.

Today, police continue to search for another suspect linked to another shooting that occurred just hours after the first.

In the first incident, investigators say a man in a wheelchair opened fire at a convenience store in Philadelphia's Mayfair neighborhood.

It happened shortly before 3 p.m. in the 3300 block of St. Vincent Street at Schaaf Market.

An adult man was shot and injured. He was taken to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital by police in critical condition.

Authorities still don't know exactly what led to the shooting.

Police said the suspected shooter was taken into custody Monday evening. His identity has not yet been revealed.

The second incident occurred in a residential area where many children frequently play outside.

Several police officers and at least 13 evidence markers surrounded the section of Wilson Park Apartments in South Philadelphia.

Police say a 50-year-old man was shot at 26th and Jackson streets just after 5:30 p.m.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“We know that 12 shots were fired from a semi-automatic weapon. It appears that the shooter was standing very, very close to the victim,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small of the Philadelphia Police.

Other people were outside when the shots rang out, including children playing at the nearby Wilson Park Boys and Girls Clubs of Philadelphia.

The club's vice president said the club was on lockdown for nearly an hour with about 40 children inside.

“One of the young women entered the building because she was fleeing the gunfire,” Shanelle Coleman recalls.

Coleman says they are more than prepared for these lockdowns because of previous shootings.

“They know it's a safe haven. It doesn't matter where you are. If you know you can access the club, the doors are always open and we will protect you,” she said.

Police say surveillance video could have helped them identify the suspect, who was seen fleeing in a burgundy Toyota sedan.

No arrests have been made in this case.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 215-686-TIPS.
