Man in custody following police standoff in Huntington

Police units on scene near Guilford and Roche streets in Huntington

HUNTINGTON, Ind. (WANE) — Police arrested a man early Tuesday morning after a 4-hour standoff in Huntington.

According to Huntington Police, they received a tip around 9:30 Monday evening that Nathan Lee Fugate, 33, was at a home in the 200 block of Roche Street. Fugate had outstanding warrants for his arrest issued by Allen County.

Officers from the Huntington Police Department responded and attempted to locate Fugate. When they knocked and announced their presence at the home, a man answered from inside and threatened to shoot the officers if they entered. That man was later identified as Nathan Lee Fugate.

Fugate continued to make threats toward officers as he barricaded himself in an upstairs apartment. It was later determined that he had no contractual interest in the apartment because it was vacant and available for rental.

Around 10:45 p.m., the Allen County Sheriff's Department's SWAT team and the Fort Wayne Police Department's drone unit responded to assist. Local officers evacuated nearby homes as a precaution. Police safely arrested Fugate shortly after 2:30 a.m. and transported him to a hospital to receive medical treatment.

Police are still investigating and local charges are pending.
