Man imprisoned for Kearney murder convicted on federal charge

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A Kearney man already behind bars in connection with a homicide is facing a longer prison sentence.

Joseph Garcia, 21, was convicted Tuesday of illegal possession of ammunition.

He will spend four years in federal prison, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

In February 2022, Garcia was arrested in Buffalo County.

He had methamphetamine in his pocket and a digital scale and glass pipes in the center console, authorities said.

Police also found 9mm ammunition in the vehicle.

As a convicted felon and drug user, Garcia was not allowed to possess firearms or ammunition.

Days before the traffic stop, Garcia was charged in a robbery in Kearney that turned fatal.

He was convicted last year of aiding and abetting murder and possession of methamphetamine.

Romeo Chambers, 27, is awaiting trial in the second-degree murder case.

Garcia is scheduled to be released from state prison in 2028, at which time he will begin his federal sentence.

There is no parole in the federal system. After his release from prison, he will be on supervised release for three years.
