Officer-involved shooting on South Maryland Avenue in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — The Mahoning County Coroner's Office on Monday identified a man killed last week after an exchange of gunfire with city police.

A news release says Mathue O'Malley, 27, died around 1:05 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Health Center after being injured by city police investigating a domestic violence call about 12 hours later early at a home at 134 S. Maryland Ave.

Police said when they arrived, O'Malley confronted them with a gun and several shots were exchanged, with O'Malley being hit.

One officer was taken to the hospital for medical treatment and was not injured by gunfire.

Police did not say how many officers involved fired their weapons. The National Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation is investigating the circumstances of the shooting. Once their investigation is complete, the results will be forwarded to the Mahoning County Prosecutor's Office to determine whether charges should be filed.

The police department will conduct its own investigation to determine whether all departmental procedures were followed.

The city's last police shooting was Oct. 12, when a 45-year-old man was shot and killed by police while responding to a burglary call on Helena Avenue.

BCI is investigating this matter. A final report has not yet been published.

In August, some city police officers on the Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team were involved in a fatal shooting during a standoff in Howland.

In February, someone fired several shots at a member of the department's Neighborhood Response Unit while he was on patrol. No arrests have been made in this case.
