Man found deceased in Currituck field identified

MOYOCK — The man whose body was found in a Currituck County field in March after being reported missing has been identified as Scott Brauer.

Capt. Kevin McCord of the Currituck County Sheriff's Office released the man's name and said he “died as a result of a medical issue.”

According to an online obituary, Scott Edward Brauer was 61 years old on March 2 when he died. He was born in Detroit on December 28, 1962 and is survived by his mother, mother-in-law, life partner and other loved ones.

Brauer was a U.S. Navy veteran, according to his obituary. He served for 20 years as a second gunner and retired as a petty officer first class in 2004.

He owned a home in the 200 block of Sunny Lake Road in Moyock since 2023, according to Currituck County GIS records.

Deputies responded to a call at 7:40 a.m. March 2 at Sunny Lake Road for a report of a missing person, according to a Facebook post from the sheriff's office.

The missing person had not returned home, “had a medical condition that required medication prescribed twice daily” and “may be in serious need” of medical help, the post said.

After scanning his phone, indicating he was in the area near his home, “officers located a suspicious object in the field several hundred yards behind the residence,” according to the message. “The missing person was found dead in a large field just north of the Eagle Creek subdivision.”

The medical examiner and detectives “arrived and examined the scene,” but there “does not appear to be any criminal intent at this time,” the sheriff’s office said at the time.
