Man found dead at Lake James identified

Presley Junior Jaynes, 76, of Morganton, was found dead by visitors to Lake James State Park who saw him floating in the water shortly before 8:15 p.m., according to a news release from the sheriff's office of Burke County.

Visitors called 911 after determining Jaynes was not breathing, the release said. Jaynes was found near the Paddy's Creek Lake area.

Jaynes was dead when first responders arrived, according to the release.

His death remains under investigation. Jaynes was seen in the park earlier in the day, Burke County Sheriff Banks Hinceman said.

Burke County Emergency Medical Services, Burke County Rescue Squad, Longtown Volunteer Fire Department and North Carolina State Park Rangers responded to the scene along with BCSO.
