Man fatally shot by Chicago police in stabbing identified by medical examiner

Chicago police shot and killed a man during a violent attack in the Austin neighborhood Monday evening.

Officers were on routine patrol in the 300 block of Cicero Avenue around 11:10 p.m. when they saw a man trying to stab another man in the street.

The offender was asked to drop the weapon, but he continued to attack, according to police. The police fired in their direction.

Police said both the attacker and the victim were struck by gunfire. The offender was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Cook County Medical Examiner identified the offender as Tracey D. Watson, 35, of Chicago.

The victim was transported to Stroger Hospital and is in critical condition. Two police officers were transported to a nearby hospital for observation.

The widespread use of force is under investigation by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA). The agents concerned will be assigned to routine administrative tasks for a minimum period of 30 days.
