Man dies in Westmoreland County apartment fire

A man died Saturday evening in an apartment fire in Westmoreland County. Thaddeus Anthony Peckyno, 69, was trapped in his apartment on the 200 block of West Smithfield Street in Mt. Pleasant, according to Westmoreland County Coroner Tim Carson. He later died in a hospital. Carson said the cause of the fire appeared to be an accident due to a stove or grease fire. According to a release, a neighbor contacted 911 around 11:40 p.m. and reported smoke in the structure. Mt. Pleasant police arrived a few minutes later and determined that entrapment had occurred. The Mt. Pleasant and Scottdale fire departments responded to the scene and were able to gain entry. in the flat. Once inside the apartment, the man was found on the floor in a back bedroom. The state fire marshal is investigating the matter.
