Man dies in plane crash near Picacho Peak, authorities say

A hiker witnessed a plane crash near the summit of Picacho Peak Saturday morning, authorities said. The national park is closed due to a “critical incident”.

PICACHO, Ariz. — One person has died following a plane crash near Picacho Peak, authorities said.

Saturday morning, around 7:25 a.m., the Pinal County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from a hiker who witnessed a plane crash near Picacho Peak. The plane was occupied only by the pilot, authorities said.

The pilot, later identified as James Galvin, 68, of Oro Valley, was pronounced dead at the scene.

PCSO Search and Rescue, DPS Ranger 2 and Avra ​​Valley Fire are currently working on recovery efforts, and the scene will be turned over to the NTSB and FAA. , authorities said.
