Man dies after crash near 22nd Street and Cherrybell Stra

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – A man has died following a crash near E. 22nd St. and S Cherrybell Stra. This happened on June 12, 2024, shortly before 6:30 p.m.

Police said a BMW, driven by Mark Leonard Mason, 52, was traveling along E. 22nd St. Mason westbound. Mason began making a left turn onto S. Cherrybell Stra when he struck a Honda Accord traveling eastbound in the middle lane. The Accord continued to move into the eastbound lanes, causing debris to strike another car.

Mason was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The other two drivers did not require medical attention.

An officer from the Tucson Police Department's Impaired Driver Unit responded to the scene and assessed the driver of the Honda Accord for impairment. It was determined that he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident.

Police said Mason was attempting to turn left at a yellow light. The inability to yield during this turn was the primary contributing factor to the accident.

Mason died on June 15 from injuries sustained in the crash.

This is an ongoing investigation and no citations or charges have been issued at this time.
