Man Dead After Suspected July 4 Homicide In Wisconsin, Suspect In Custody

COLUMBUS, Wis. (WFRV) – One person is in custody after an apparent homicide in a downtown area early Thursday morning.

According to a statement, a Columbus police officer heard a sound similar to fireworks in the downtown area. Upon arrival, he located an adult male who had been shot.


The officer attempted to save the victim's life, but she was pronounced dead a short time later at a nearby hospital.

Through investigation and analysis of multiple video camera images, a suspect was identified and taken into custody shortly before 2 p.m. in the city of Madison. The firearm believed to have been involved in the alleged crime was found along the suspect's escape route.

The Columbus County Sheriff's Office said it wanted to let the public know that the suspect is not in danger because he is in custody and is believed to have acted alone.

An official press conference is scheduled for Friday at 10:00 a.m., where further information about the incident will be released.
