Man dead after South Berkeley shooting, details limited

A man has been pronounced dead in South Berkeley after a reported shooting on Wednesday evening.

Details were limited as of publication time.

According to dispatch audio reviewed by The Scanner, a neighbor called police at about 7:25 p.m. to report that someone had been shot.

Police responded quickly and found a blood trail leading to a residence on Martin Luther King Jr. Way just north of Ashby Avenue.

Responding officers found a man on the porch who had sustained a gunshot wound to the head and torso.

Authorities attempted CPR but subsequently pronounced the man dead.

The location, Martin Luther King Jr. House, appears to be a single-room occupancy complex “serving a disabled community,” according to records online.

Police are working to clear the house and make sure all residents are safe.

Officers also shut down traffic in the area.

No information was available about the circumstances of the shooting.
