Man dead after Pittsylvania County shooting, person of interest in custody: sheriff

An individual died Thursday after a shooting in Pittsylvania County, deputies said.

Around 8:15 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of Shula Drive in Hurt for a reported shooting incident. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound. Medical treatment was provided to the lone victim, but he died at the scene, deputies said.

Police said they learned a person of interest had fled the scene prior to their arrival. After a search around the crime scene, the individual was found and immediately taken into custody by law enforcement without incident.

Deputies say the victim was identified as Jimmy Dee Hardwick, a 28-year-old white man who was injured. Hardwick will be taken to the Western District of Virginia Medical Examiner's Office, where the cause and manner of death will be determined.

Deputies said the Commonwealth's Attorney is assisting investigators. Law enforcement remains on site to collect evidence. Investigators consider this act to be limited to the area of ​​the crime scene. Investigators are confident this incident poses no further threat to the community. Criminal charges are expected.
