Man dead after parking argument led to self-defense shooting, Phoenix police say

PHOENIX (AZFamille) — A man is dead after an argument led to a shooting in north Phoenix, and police say the shooter fired in self-defense.

This happened Saturday evening around 9:20 p.m. Phoenix police were called to a shooting near 27th Avenue and Beardsley Road. The police arrived and arrested a man who had a gun.

Another man, identified as Alejandro Samplina, 32, was found on the ground in the parking lot. Samplina was taken to hospital, where he later died.

Police say Samplina and the shooter got into an argument over parking. Samplina then pulled out a knife and chased the man around his car.

That's when the man grabbed a gun from the open door of his vehicle. Police said Samplina continued to approach the man with the knife in a threatening manner, and that's when the man fired his gun, hitting Samplina.

Detectives interviewed the man, who claimed to be defending himself. Police said that claim was consistent with witness and surveillance camera videos.

The man was released after an investigation.

Phoenix police said the charges will be submitted to the Maricopa County District Attorney's Office for review.
