Man cuts off wife's hand for alleged infidelity

Police in Kayunga District are searching for a 34-year-old man who allegedly cut off his wife's hand due to alleged infertility.

Ms Rosette Sikahwa, Kayunga District Police Commander, yesterday identified the victim as a resident of Misanga C village in Bbaale sub-county.
The events occurred Friday morning.

The 29-year-old woman, who also suffered serious injuries from pangas on other parts of her body, is currently admitted to Jinja Hospital.

The man, who is a fisherman at the Misanga landing site on the Nile, is in hiding.

How did it happen
Mr John Kayonga, Misanga Village C chairman, said the woman's woes began when she disappeared from home without informing her husband where she had gone.

“The man returned home and discovered his wife was not there. He became furious and started looking for her. He failed to get her back even though some residents told him they had seen her with another man,” Mr Kayonga said.

He added: “To make matters worse, the woman did not return home. »

Mr Kayonga said the couple had been married for two years and had a one-year-old child.

Ms Besi Khaselele, head of Bbaale police station, said the woman returned home the next day.

“When the husband saw her, he became furious and confronted her. He asked her where she had slept but the woman's explanation did not convince him,” Ms Khaselele said.

The couple then got involved in a duel, but later the husband rushed to the home of the LC1 zone chairman to inform him about the matter.

The village president and secretary for women's affairs rushed to the couple's home to help resolve the dispute.

“But things turned bloody when the woman accused her man of being lazy in bed. The woman said, “When you saw me with another man, what did you do?” This made the man even more furious. He entered his house and came back with a panga and started hacking his wife,” Mr Kayonga said.

However, he said, while trying to protect his head using his hands, the man cut one of his hands.

Screaming and bleeding profusely, the woman collapsed while her husband threw the panga and fled.

Residents rushed the woman to Bbaale Health Center IV, from where she was referred to Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital. She is currently admitted to Jinja Hospital.

Ms Khaselele said police recovered a panga from the couple's home and the woman's hand that had been severed was buried over the weekend.
