Man charged with unprovoked stabbing of tourist in Times Square

NEW YORK (1010 VICTORY/WCBS 880) — A 61-year-old man has been charged with stabbing a tourist in Times Square last month, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg Jr. announced Tuesday.

Cyril Destin was charged with one count of attempted assault, one count of assault and one count of criminal possession of a weapon.

According to court documents, around 6:10 p.m. on May 11, Destin was sitting on his walker outside a bodega in Times Square when he pulled out a large kitchen knife as a woman walked by him .

The victim, a 36-year-old woman, was walking on Eighth Avenue near West 43rd Street when Destin suddenly rushed toward her with the knife and stabbed her in the chest, officials said.

Then Destin sat back down on his walker while continuing to hold the knife, authorities said.

The woman was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue where she was treated for a stab wound to the chest.

“When tourists visit New York, they deserve to enjoy our city without fearing for their safety. Cyril Destin compromised that by allegedly stabbing a woman who was visiting his daughter and his daughter's friend on a school trip.” , said DA Bragg. “I hope the victim continues to heal from this unprovoked attack.”
