Man charged with murder in fatal weekend stabbing on Sherman Avenue: PD

NEW HAVEN, CT — A 48-year-old New Haven man has been charged with murder in connection with a fatal weekend stabbing, police said.

On Saturday, shortly after 1 a.m., Yale Protective Services at St. Raphael Hospital notified the New Haven Police Department of a walk-in victim with a gunshot wound, according to a spokesperson for the police, Christian Bruckhart. But it turned out that Travis James, 47, unconscious and in critical condition, had been stabbed, not shot, by Bruckhart. James, who was dropped off at the hospital in a private vehicle, died from his injuries, authorities said.

Investigators learned that James was at Sam's Mart on Whalley Avenue when he got into an argument with, at the time, an “unknown individual,” Bruckhart said. “The altercation escalated and James was stabbed and taken to hospital.”

New Haven detectives “quickly identified Antwine Mike as the suspect, based on video surveillance as well as tips from community members and New Haven police officers who knew him,” Bruckhart said.

Detective James Marcum, working closely with the state's attorney's office, was able to obtain an arrest warrant for Mike Sunday and the man turned himself in to police “without incident,” Bruckhart said , and was charged with murder.

Mike is currently being held on $2,000,000 bail.
