UNION COUNTY, NC (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A man faces a series of charges in connection with a shooting that occurred in late June near the Wingate University baseball field.

Weston Parker Charles Vonegidy was arrested on Tuesday, July 2 and transported to the Union County Jail where he was given a $200,000 bond.

On Friday, June 28, the campus was placed on lockdown shortly before 7 p.m. following reports of a shooting near the baseball field.

Investigators say a man, identified as Vonegidy, drove erratically on Wilson Street before driving his truck into a ditch. He then fired several shots into the truck, injuring himself.

According to police, Vonegidy then jumped out of his truck and over a fence. Police said they found him “running around the baseball field” where a youth baseball game was taking place.

First responders were providing medical treatment to Vonegidy when he began resisting and fled, authorities said. He was quickly caught and subdued before being airlifted to a local hospital.

Vonegidy is not a student or affiliated with the school.

Since his release from hospital, Vonegidy has been arrested and charged with:

  • Firearm on school property

  • Offense of possession of a Schedule I controlled substance
  • Offense of possession of a controlled substance in Schedule II x2
