Man charged with drug trafficking following traffic stop

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (WFIE) – A man is now in jail after police say they found drugs in his car during a traffic stop.

Police say it all started when they noticed a vehicle heading south on I-69 quickly slow down when it came into view of the patrol car.

The vehicle then crossed the right fog line and slowed further as it approached the merge lanes of Exit 116, according to a police report.

Police said the vehicle then remained in the right lane as vehicles attempted to merge, causing traffic to back up. That’s when police conducted a traffic stop.

The Madisonville Police Department said that during the stop, officers identified the driver as Justin Dawson.

Police said they could smell marijuana coming from the vehicle and saw drug paraphernalia inside.

A news release shows officers seized the paraphernalia and then searched the rest of the vehicle.

During their search, officers found a backpack containing 1.1 pounds of marijuana, several packing bags and a rolling tray in the truck.

Police say they also discovered a large sum of cash.

Dawson was arrested and booked into the Hopkins County Jail where he faces:

  • Marijuana trafficking
  • Drug paraphernalia – Delivery/manufacturing
  • Failure to present insurance card
