Man charged in connection with June 19 mass shooting in Lake Merritt

(KRON) — A 23-year-old man has been charged with shooting four people at Oakland's Juneteenth event at Lake Merritt, Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price said.

JaJuan Kelly, of Oakland, has been charged with four counts of assault with a deadly weapon. His alleged victims are four of the 14 people who were shot at the event.

“I am deeply relieved to announce that one of the individuals we believe to be responsible for
who took part in the June 19 mass shooting at the lake has been charged with a list of serious crimes
“Serious crimes,” Price said.

Kelly has previous convictions for theft, possession of an assault weapon and robbery. For this reason, he was prohibited from possessing weapons and ammunition and was charged with these offenses.

The shooting occurred shortly after 8:45 p.m. in the 400 block of Grand Avenue on June 19. A fight and a show escalated into a mass shooting, which left several people injured. All of the victims survived.

The shooting brought a tragic end to a celebration that had been peaceful for most of the day. About 5,000 people gathered at the lake to celebrate.

Kelly was arraigned Wednesday at 9 a.m. Anyone with information about other shooters is asked to call Oakland police at (510) 238-3455.
