According to an affidavit, a Tyler Police Department detective clocked a vehicle going 60 mph in a 40 mph zone in the area of 300 E Southeast Loop 323. The detective stopped the driver, Cordrell Smith Radway, 20, where he allegedly fled the police officer “while he was still detained and was not free to leave.”

After a short chase, the detective caught up with Radway and “ended up on the ground,” where Radway allegedly actively resisted arrest and repeatedly attempted to get up. The affidavit says the detective then used his pepper spray.

During the altercation, Radway allegedly grabbed the detective's hand while pepper-spraying him, took the can away and bit the detective's left forearm, leaving a visible bite mark.

Officers then arrived to assist the detective and handcuffed Radway who was then taken to a local hospital for minor injuries. At the hospital, Radway allegedly told an officer “you're all shit officers” and “you better hope I don't see your ass when I get out.”

The officers said that based on Radway's aggressive behavior and assaults toward the officers, they believed Radway “intentionally and knowingly threatened unlawful harm” to the officers in retaliation.

Radway is being held in the Smith County Jail on $141,000 bail on charges of taking a weapon from an officer, assaulting a peace officer, obstructing or retaliating, evading arrest, resisting search or transportation during an arrest.
