On Tuesday, May 21, a 40-year-old man was attacked by a black bear during a morning walk near the ski resort of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The victim reports she was struck from behind and knocked to the ground around 9:45 a.m. while walking on a trail from Walton Creek Road to Mount Werner Circle. The man reports seeing a one-year-old lion cub on the path before being attacked. The victim was slightly injured in the arm. He was able to complete the walk before receiving first aid.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) officers set bear traps and posted warning signs along the trail and were able to capture the mother bear and her two of her three one-year-old cubs Wednesday afternoon. CPW confirmed Thursday, May 22, that the mother bear was humanely euthanized in accordance with department policy. Officers confirm that after examining the cubs, it was determined that the one-year-old cubs were old enough to survive on their own and were relocated to southern Routt County. CPW will not attempt to capture the third yearling and the traps have been removed.
