Man arrested in shooting at Brookhaven Apartments in Tuscaloosa

Investigators have arrested a man they say was responsible and also injured in a shooting at Brookhaven Apartments in Tuscaloosa earlier this month.

The shooting left two people injured and came just days after an apparently unrelated shooting at the same housing complex left one man dead and another victim injured.

The second shooting occurred before dawn on Sunday, May 18. In court documents filed Tuesday, police say Brett Abrams, a 36-year-old Tuscaloosa man, is responsible.

In a deposition, investigators say Abrams was the primary aggressor in the shooting and struck a 23-year-old man at the Brookhaven Apartments, seriously injuring him.

Police said gunfire was exchanged and Abrams was also injured and was later admitted to DCH, where police identified him as the Brookhaven suspect based on details provided by witnesses or surveillance footage.

Now that Abrams has been treated and released from the hospital, police have charged him with attempted murder in connection with the incident.

He remained incarcerated Tuesday evening at the Tuscaloosa County Jail, where his bond has not yet been set.

Although the shooting occurred less than a week after the shooting that killed 41-year-old Travaris Keandre Banks, police say the two cases do not appear to be related.

“There is no evidence that this incident is related to the previous shooting/murder that occurred at the same apartment complex earlier this week,” said Capt. Jack Kennedy, commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit , at the beginning of the month.
