Man arrested in Saturday shooting on West Tuscaloosa street

A Tuscaloosa man was arrested and charged with attempted murder after allegedly fatally shooting another man while they were stopped in traffic Saturday.

According to court documents filed Tuesday – Monday was a holiday – the victim was driving on Kaaulton Road in west Tuscaloosa when an SUV pulled in front of him last Saturday, June 1.

Behind him, a black Nissan Altima stopped and a man allegedly emerged and opened fire on the victim's stopped car.

The adult male who was driving the targeted vehicle fled the area and returned to his nearby residence, where Tuscaloosa police officers and medical personnel responded and found him suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his arm and chest .

The victim was treated at DCH Regional Medical Center and the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit took charge of the case.

Witness statements and forensic evidence led them to 41-year-old James Hughes, also known as “Pops.”

Hughes was located Saturday and questioned, and he allegedly admitted to shooting the other man while the two were stopped in the roadway.

Hughes was arrested and charged with one count of attempted murder and one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle.

He was booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail and remained there Tuesday on a combined bond of $50,000.
