Man arrested for violent carjacking on Outer Loop appears in court

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – The man arrested for brutal assault and carjacking on Outer Loop just appeared in court Thursday morning.

The carjacking took place on May 23. However, the reason Jason Calhoun has only just appeared in court for this crime is because he was shot multiple times by the alleged victim and was in the hospital recovering.

According to an arrest report detailing what happened, a man's car had broken down, so he left it there briefly and returned to his wife's car a short time later. When he returned to his disabled vehicle, Calhoun allegedly waited for him and immediately asked the victim to hand over his car.

When the victim refused, warning Calhoun that he was carrying a gun, Calhoun allegedly violently assaulted him. Police said Calhoun stomped on the victim's body, strangled him and tried to gouge out one of his eyes.

The victim shot Calhoun multiple times in self-defense. Police say Calhoun fled in the victim's vehicle, but the car was struck by a tractor-trailer and Calhoun was arrested. Six days later, Calhoun finally appeared in court.

The judge assigned him a public defender and set his bond at $250,000. If he posts that bond, he will be in home confinement. Calhoun will be back in court on June 7.
