Man arrested after hours-long standoff in northeast Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A 30-year-old man was arrested Tuesday evening after an hours-long standoff in a northeast Bakersfield neighborhood.

The Bakersfield Police Department said officers were dispatched to the 6000 block of Hill Dale Court, near Fairfax Road, around 6 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a domestic violence incident.

Officials said when officers arrived, the victim and children safely left the residence.

Officers began communicating by telephone with the suspect, identified as Paul McCormack, 30, to arrange for his “safe surrender.”

According to police, McCormack threatened the officers and refused to surrender.

After two hours of phone communication, the SWAT team, bomb squad, crisis negotiators and an unmanned aircraft systems team were called to the scene.

A “kinetic breaching tool” was used to gain access to the front door. Police said the tool looked like a gun, but at no time was a firearm discharged.

McCormack was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of crimes related to domestic violence, false imprisonment, child endangerment and violation of a restraining order.

Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact the Bakersfield Police Department at 661-327-7111.

McCormack is due in court Thursday.
