Man arrested after hours-long standoff at Canterbury Green flats

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – A 26-year-old man was arrested early Monday morning following a domestic dispute and ensuing police standoff at a North Side apartment complex, police said .

Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) detectives said a woman texted 911 for help during a domestic dispute around 4:40 a.m. Police said they worked with dispatchers to find the woman's whereabouts, locating her at a flat in Canterbury Green, off St. Joe Road.

Officers say they found the woman's apartment and took her and a child outside safely. They claim the woman was held inside the apartment against her will by 26-year-old Tavon Malik Underwood.

Once the woman and child came outside, detectives said they learned Underwood was still inside with other adults. Underwood was found to have an active felony warrant following an independent investigation, involving a probation violation and possession of a narcotic drug.

After a nearly four-hour standoff involving the FWPD's Crisis Response Team and Air Support Unit, police were able to get Tavon out of the apartment.

He was subsequently arrested on his active warrant and was also charged with criminal confinement.
