Man arrested after hitting, killing construction worker in Hartford: police – NBC Connecticut

A construction worker died after a vehicle drove through a construction site in Hartford Wednesday afternoon and struck him, police say, and the driver involved in the collision was arrested.

They said the driver hit the construction worker in the area of ​​West Boulevard and South Whitney Street around 12:12 p.m. and also struck equipment and a dump truck.

The crew had dug a trench on the road and a flagger was on hand to direct traffic.

It appears a driver traveling at a high speed crossed the construction site and struck the victim, police said Wednesday afternoon. The affected worker, later identified as Jose Diaz-Nieves, 54, of East Hartford, died at the scene.



After the crash, the vehicle became disabled and stopped, said police, who are speaking with the driver.

Authorities said the driver, identified as Tommy Nguyen, 25, of Hartford, was arrested.

Nguyen faces charges including involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving, risk of injury to a minor, driving without insurance, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, driving with a suspended license, failure to use a seat child safety and inappropriate use of a marking plate. His bail was set at $1 million.

Two passengers in Nguyen's vehicle were taken to the hospital. Their injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

OSHA responded to the scene. The investigation is active and ongoing.
