Man arrested after heading to Bolder Boulder Racetrack

Boulder police said the man crashed into a car in a parking lot and nearly hit a pedestrian before being arrested.

BOULDER, Colo. — A man was arrested after Boulder police say they were able to stop him from driving at Bolder Boulder Racetrack Monday.

The driver is also accused of crashing into a car in a parking lot and nearly hitting a woman who was walking as he tried to escape police.

A Boulder police officer arrested the man just after 8:15 a.m. in the parking lot of Whole Foods Market on Pearl Street after receiving reports that someone was “acting strange” near the barricades of the Bolder Boulder race, which was taking place at this moment. Witnesses said the man driving a dark-colored Ford Explorer was wearing a ski mask and obeyed two stop signs.

Police said the man first stopped and spoke to the officer on the bike before driving off. As he was exiting the parking lot, the man crashed into another car in the parking lot and narrowly missed a woman walking.

The man then headed toward roads where Bolder Boulder participants were previously running, police said, so they were able to stop his vehicle and arrest him.

Police are now searching for the driver of the hit car as well as the woman who was walking nearby.

“We are all very grateful that these two community members appear to be OK despite what happened and that we stopped this man before he could get any closer to racing,” the acting chief said. Boulder police Stephen Redfearn said in a statement. “I am very proud of how quickly our officers protected the community yesterday and I am hopeful that we can find these two people.”

Anyone who knows the identities of these two victims or has information about this incident is asked to contact Detective Ed Quayle at [email protected] or 720-564-2078 and reference case 24-05068.

The man who was arrested faces possible charges of vehicle hijacking, hit and run, reckless endangerment, obstruction, driving without a valid driver's license and driving without insurance.
