Man arrested after climbing onto roof of Euro 2024 stadium during Germany-Denmark match

A man has been arrested for climbing on the roof of Signal Iduna Park during Germany's European Championship match against Denmark.

Dortmund police released a statement on Sunday confirming the arrest of a 21-year-old man after “a person climbed onto the roof of the stadium” during Germany's 2-0 round of 16 victory.

Local police said the man, from the nearby town of Osnabrück, was under investigation for suspected trespassing.

The man was carrying photographic equipment, police said, adding that he allegedly said during questioning that he wanted to take “good photos.”

Police spokesman Peter Bandermann said on Saturday: “A person climbed onto the roof of the stadium at 10:27 p.m. during the match. The officers approached to speak to the person and provide them with a safe means of exiting the roof. »

“A police helicopter lit the roof of the stadium for this purpose. No information can currently be given on the man's motive and identity.

UEFA praised the work of the police in a statement on Sunday, adding that “security measures will be reviewed at all host venues” following the incident.

A statement said: “Safety and security in the stadium, on the pitch and in team facilities is UEFA’s ultimate priority.

“UEFA would like to commend the police, the stadium and local authorities for their cooperation during last night's incident in Dortmund involving an individual arrested by police on the roof of the stadium.”

The incident occurred after the match was temporarily suspended due to adverse conditions during a thunderstorm.

Referee Michael Oliver stopped play in the 36th minute and led the players off the field amid flashes of lightning and the sound of thunder.

“Due to unfavorable weather conditions, the match was suspended. Further information will follow soon,” the stadium said in a statement.

The match was suspended for around 25 minutes before it was resumed and people gathered in fan zones across the city were evacuated.
